Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

The big news this week was the announcement from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez that face masks will no longer need to be worn outdoors from Saturday, June 26.

The much-awaited statement came at a time when the vaccination campaign has moved on to the over-40 age group in much of the country, and with the incidence of the virus at its lowest level since last August.

Meanwhile in Spain, violence against women has surged in the space of a month, with 12 women killed by their current or former partners since May 17. The latest victim was Consuelo, 81, who was attacked and killed with a hammer by her husband this week.

And finally, we are back with another episode of our ¿Qué? Spanish News Podcast, in which we look at the tragic disappearance of Olivia and Anna in Tenerife, and discuss how Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez‘s expected "bilateral meeting” with US President Joe Biden turned into a brief, hallway chat.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition.

Thanks for reading.
