Dear readers,
Nine Catalan separatists jailed for their involvement in the failed 2017 secession attempt in Catalonia were released from prison on Wednesday after receiving government pardons. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the move as a bid to restore "social harmony" in the region, but the opposition argue it was politically motivated.
In other news, antivirus software entrepreneur John McAfee was found dead in his cell in a penitentiary in Barcelona. Prison workers found the 75-year-old hanging and authorities are treating the case as a suicide.
Meanwhile in Spain, a coronavirus outbreak linked to student vacations in Mallorca has led to hundreds of positive cases, with 320 contagions recorded just in Madrid. The news comes as expert warn that the delta strain of the virus will become predominant in a matter of weeks.
And finally, as of Saturday, face masks in Spain will no longer need to be worn outside if social distancing can be respected. To help clarify the changes, EL PAÍS published an infographic special on what rules apply to the beach, public transportation and open-air events.
We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition.
Thanks for reading.
