Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

This week marked one month since Russia launched its offensive against Ukraine. We spoke to Ukrainian foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, about the ongoing negotiations with the Kremlin, and the likelihood that Russia will resort to chemical weapons. We also took a closer look at the sanctions being levied against some of the country's oligarchs.

Meanwhile in the world of science, we reported on two important medical breakthroughs: a brain-machine interface that allowed an ALS patient in completely locked-in state to communicate, and a new drug that is multiplying the survival rate of women with breast cancer.

And finally, with the Academy Awards around the corner, we dived into some of the controversies surrounding the contenders – from the criticism of the zany female character in The Worst Person in the World to the internal strife at Disney over its timid response to Florida’s "Don’t Say Gay" bill.

Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

As the situation in Ukraine worsens, this week we took a look at the effects of the conflict in other parts of the world. On the US-Mexican border, for example, Russians and Ukrainians fleeing their home countries are starting to arrive. Some are finding it easier than others, however, to enter American territory.

We also took a look at China, where the coronavirus pandemic is returning with force in a country that until now has been pursuing a “zero-Covid” strategy.

And finally, in the world of culture we took a look at Rosalía’s new album, ‘Motomami,’ which was applauded by the EL PAÍS culture critic Carlos Marcos.

Dear readers,
With the situation for civilians in Ukraine growing more dire by the day, our correspondents looked at the conflict through the eyes of several children who were forced to flee their homes. And Pilar Bonet, who covered the Soviet Union and Russia for EL PAÍS for 34 years, analyzed the history behind the conflict as well as the questionable ideological assumptions that underlie it.
In other news, we examined why the US hospitality sector is struggling so much to find restaurant staff despite improved job conditions, talked to leading scientist Juan Carlos Izpisua about a big-budget and secretive project by Altos Labs to reverse the aging process, and looked at the inspirational story of Marcel Rémy, a man who is still climbing at age 99.

Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

More than a week into Russia's invasion of Ukraine, concerns are mounting about President Vladimir Putin's aggressive rhetoric, particularly after he ordered strategic nuclear weapons to be placed on combat-ready mode. EL PAÍS has explored the likelihood that the Russian leader will act on his threats, and asked global experts to explain the key factors behind the military offensive.

In other news, we interviewed US paleoanthropologist Tim White, a living legend in his field, about his quest to uncover the distant origins of ‘Homo sapiens,’ looked at what the 'Perserverance' rover has been up to ever since it landed on Mars in February of last year, and talked to musical superstar Rosalía about the meaning of her new hit single Chicken Teriyaki.

C2 The war in Ukraine could change everything (Yuval Noah Harari)

Concerned about the war Ukraine? You're not alone. Historian Yuval Noah Harari provides important context on the Russian invasion, including Ukraine's long history of resistance, the specter of nuclear war and his view of why, even if Putin wins all the military battles, he's already lost the war. Help Ukraine!
