Learning a language is no easy task. Like optical illusions, language can play tricks on the brain, explained New York University psychologist Gary Marcus at a lecture at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Simple syntactic ambiguities, he argued, throw a wrench into prevalent theories that the human brain is well evolved—or even optimally evolved—for language.
