C2 Mock Orals

During  January we'll be doing mock orals during Nydia's lessons. All of you will stay with her, while one pair (2 couples an hour) will be coming with me to another classroom to do the oral. This is not compulsory.

I need you to send a message to the Post a Comment section below stating your names (in twos), and then I'll be writing your names next to the times listed. Chronological order will be used. I understand those of you who don't write the post will not do the mock oral.

Blue Monday is the name given to a day in January (typically the third Monday of the month) that is considered the most depressing day of the year.
The term originated as a marketing campaign by UK travel companies to incentivize people to travel abroad.

The Venezuelan prisoners who learned of Maduro’s fall a week later

Dear readers,

This week we spoke to Venezuelan prisoners who did not find out about Maduro's arrest until a week later. Without access to telephones, radios, televisions, or newspapers, they had no idea that the U.S. had captured the Venezuelan leader.

In other Venezuela-related news, we talked with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares about EU sanctions on Delcy Rodriguez, the release of political prisoners, and the need for a democratic solution. "We can’t allow a civil conflict to erupt in Venezuela," he said.

Meanwhile, in Mexico, authorities warn that a new “Chapo” is emerging: Fausto Isidro Meza Flores. “He exports more drugs than everyone else,” one source told EL PAÍS.

And finally, one of our most-read stories this week examined the legacy of China's one-child policy, which has left the country scrambling to find new ways to increase birth rates.

Maduro has been removed. Now what?

Dear readers,

With the world still reeling from the events of the past week in Venezuela, we spoke with members of the diaspora living in the United States to see whether they feel hopeful for the future of their country — and what Nicolás Maduro's downfall could mean for their own legal status in the U.S.

Meanwhile, our correspondent in Copenhagen reports that scenarios are being discussed and counter-offers are being drafted to appease Donald Trump and prevent him from planting the Star-Spangled Banner in Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital, with or without gunfire.

And in one of our most popular articles this week, the theoretical physicist Alain Aspect, a pioneer of quantum computing, talks about how Albert Einstein would have reacted to his experiments, the hype around the technology, and the parallels between physics and his new hobby: magic.

New York enters the Mamdani era

Dear readers,

As the world rang in the New Year, New York rang the changes as Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as mayor at a brief ceremony in the old City Hall subway station. Mamdani, 34, is a member of the Democratic Socialist Party of America and one of the great global hopes of the left, who swept to power on the promise of free buses, childcare for all, and a rent freeze for rent-controlled apartments.

As we enter a new year, EL PAÍS took a look at the potential scenarios for the global economy in 2026, and the rush on silver, which has risen 150% over the past 12 months due to strong investor demand for safe-haven assets and limited supply.

We also spoke to German astrophysicist and Nobel Prize winner in Physics, Reinhard Genzel, who believes ‘humanity has lost a bit of its appreciation for the truth,’ interviewed Oona Chaplin about the latest ‘Avatar’ movie, and looked at the legacy of Brigitte Bardot, who passed away last weekend at the age of 91.
