EL PAÍS (News in English)

The Venezuelan prisoners who learned of Maduro’s fall a week later

Dear readers,

This week we spoke to Venezuelan prisoners who did not find out about Maduro's arrest until a week later. Without access to telephones, radios, televisions, or newspapers, they had no idea that the U.S. had captured the Venezuelan leader.

In other Venezuela-related news, we talked with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares about EU sanctions on Delcy Rodriguez, the release of political prisoners, and the need for a democratic solution. "We can’t allow a civil conflict to erupt in Venezuela," he said.

Meanwhile, in Mexico, authorities warn that a new “Chapo” is emerging: Fausto Isidro Meza Flores. “He exports more drugs than everyone else,” one source told EL PAÍS.

And finally, one of our most-read stories this week examined the legacy of China's one-child policy, which has left the country scrambling to find new ways to increase birth rates.

We hope you enjoy this selection of stories from EL PAÍS USA Edition.
