Dear readers,
Events in Minneapolis have dominated the headlines this week, following the death of 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti at the hands of immigration enforcement officers, less than three weeks after Renee Good, a poet and mother of three, was fatally shot by agents in the same city. Donald Trump reacted to the ensuing protests by replacing Gregory Bovino, the "tough guy" commander of the US Border Patrol, with the more politically minded border czar Tom Homan.
Amid the turmoil, EL PAÍS spoke to Minneapolis pastor Sergio Amezcua, whose own reaction to the descent of thousands of armed agents on the staunchly Democratic city was to help however he could. Today, the organization he set up counts on 4,000 volunteers who provide food and basic supplies to 16,000 families.
This week we also spoke to Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, who issued a warning about Europe's technological dependence, interviewed Oscar nominee Stellan Skarsgård, and sat down with Oscar-winning director Mstyslav Chernov, whose latest work, '2,000 meters to Avdiivka' has the Ukrainian in the running for a statuette again this year.
We hope you enjoy this selection of stories from EL PAÍS USA Edition
