EL PAÍS (News in English)

The downfall of El Mencho

Dear readers,

All eyes were on Mexico this week after the world's most wanted drug trafficker, Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera, was killed by the Mexican army. EL PAÍS spoke to experts about what his downfall means for Mexico, examined the role of AI in spreading disinformation about the operation, and gained access to the cabin complex where the leader of the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) staged his last stand.

Meanwhile, tensions in Cuba remain high as Trump's oil embargo pushes the island to the brink of collapse. Adding to the strain, on Wednesday, the Cuban Coast Guard killed four people on a speedboat from the U.S., which it had intercepted in its territorial waters. According to the Interior Ministry, it "intended to carry out an infiltration for terrorist purposes."

And in other news, we looked back at the career of Steve Guttenberg, and spoke to Spanish illustrator Nazario Luque about what it was like having his work plagiarized by Lou Reed.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from EL PAÍS USA Edition.
