Latin America bids farewell to Pepe Mujica

Dear readers,

José "Pepe" Mujica, the iconic former president of Uruguay known for his austere lifestyle, died this week at the age of 89. Leftist leaders across Latin America paid tribute to the former guerilla fighter, praising his honesty, humility, and commitment to Latin American integration.

Meanwhile, in the United States, Trump's immigration crackdown continues to take a toll on Venezuelan migrants. EL PAÍS spoke to three of the eight women who were sent to El Salvador, only to be flown back to the United States. All they want now is to be deported home.

We also traveled to the library that has one door in Canada and the other in the United States. Over the last month, it has become a living symbol of the complex situation that Trump’s administration has created for the residents of the two neighboring nations.

And in business news, we looked at how Zara's global fashion network has been growing under Marta Ortega, the chair of Inditex.

Leo XIV, the new Pope

Dear readers,

‌As the eyes of the world focused on the smoke coming out of the Sistine Chapel's chimney this week, we turned back to history to seek clues about the dynamics of the convoluted process involved in conclaves to choose a new pope.

On Thursday, the world observed the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII. Our history expert Guillermo Altares provides insights into what caused entire nations to fall into the abyss of hatred, and draws parallels with today's global situation.

On the economic front, our guest columnist Barry Eichengreen explores how the tables have turned on Trump and his promise to make America great again through tariffs.

100 days of Trumpism

Dear readers,

‌President Donald Trump marked his first 100 days in office with an event outside Detroit that had all the hallmarks of a campaign rally as an adoring crowd cheered on its leader. (...)

Meanwhile, Mark Carney's victory at the polls in Canada, where the Liberals had been trailing the Conservatives for months, shows how Trump's aggressive rhetoric is having a boomerang effect.

Elsewhere in the world, Spain and Portugal were left in the dark for hours on Monday after a massive, mysterious blackout wiped out power across the Iberian Peninsula. Experts are still seeking answers as to what caused a worst-case scenario that engineers had only seen before in simulations.

This week we also bring you a special Who's Who of the 134 cardinals who will elect the new pope in the Vatican, and a column by Harvard scholar Evgeny Morozov about how tech oligarchs are working to impose their prophetic visions on the world.

Get the Most out of your Study Habits with these Tips

Few things are more stressful than studying for a big, important test. There is so much information to review for an exam, and unfortunately, study skills aren’t something they actually teach in many schools. For a lot of us, studying is an exhausting process of trial and error, and it can be all too tempting to just skip it entirely and try to cram the night before a big exam. (from Dictionary.com).
