News from EL PAÍS in English

El País English Edition 21st March 2021

Dear readers,

Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Pablo Iglesias will step down from his position to run as Unidas Podemos' candidate for Madrid premier in the upcoming regional elections. This is just one of a series of unexpected moves and counter-moves sparked by last week's no-confidence motions in Murcia.

In other big news, Spain has become the fifth country in the world to regulate euthanasia. After decades of social debate, the Congress of Deputies passed a law on Thursday that guarantees the right to a dignified death.

As for the vaccination drive, Spain will restart AstraZeneca-Oxford shots next week, after temporarily suspending the doses over safety concerns linked to blood clot cases. The European Medicines Agency, however, has concluded that the vaccine is "effective and safe." The Health Ministry has also defined which groups of chronically ill will be next in line for the shots.

And finally, we shared the story of Antoni Campañà, the Spanish Civil War photographer who took thousands of images of the conflict then hid them in a box for decades. The moving images – discovered 30 years after his death – are now on display at the National Museum of Art of Catalonia.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition, and that you are staying safe.

Thanks for reading.
