Listen Up! These Are the Silent Letters of the English Language (Dictionary.com)

You probably already know that English features many, many words with silent letters—letters that appear in the word but aren’t pronounced and often make us wonder what they are even doing there. For example, the letter B in the words debt and thumb. Or whatever the heck is going on in the words colonel, queue, and bourgeoisie.

EL PAÍS in English

Dear readers,

This week, we reported on the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which has recovered vast areas in the east of the country. Our correspondent in Ukraine traveled to cities newly liberated from the Russians, and spoke to residents about some of the horrors they saw under occupation.

We also looked at the Republican primaries in the United States, where the Democrats have been covertly supporting the most far-right candidates in the hope that they will be easier to defeat at the midterm elections.

And in cultural news, we spoke to a number of important figures including French actress Juliette Binoche, award-winning writer J.M. Coetzee and rapper-turned-actor Ben Bailey Smith.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from EL PAÍS English Edition. Thanks for reading.

EL PAÍS in English

Dear readers,

Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, died Thursday at the age of 96 at her Scottish residence. EL PAÍS looked back on her 70 years on the throne, from her influence on pop culture to her role in guiding the United Kingdom's transformation from colonial power to what it is today.

We also examined the protocols surrounding Charles' accession to the throne, and the current line of succession, from Prince William to Princess Anne, who is 14th in line. Lastly, we profiled the man who is now known as Charles III.

In other news, we analyzed the rhetoric of "pain and sacrifice" used to describe the world's financial situation, talked to political scientist Francis Fukuyama about his latest book, and asked tennis star Garbiñe Muguruza what Serena Williams has meant to her and to the sport.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from EL PAÍS English Edition. Thanks for reading.
