Mediation

Even though this blog post is written for LOMLOE students by Michael Brand (Pearson) and it is intended for teachers, you will be able to find extremely useful information about how to do this language activity and understand the way it works.

1. What is mediation in a broad sense?
2. Why is mediation important?
3. What sub skills are involved in mediation?
4. How can we develop (and how are we already developing) this competence? We will further expand on this point in the next blog posts.

An Annual LGBTQIA+ Pride Celebration

Every year, during the month of June, the LGBT community celebrates in a number of different ways. Across the globe, various events are held during this special month as a way of recognising the influence LGBT people have had around the world. Why was June chosen? Because it is when the Stonewall Riots took place, way back in 1969.
"Education is about preparing learners to build a better world where diverse individuals can share the space in harmony. It is important to make learners (and all individuals) feel accepted, included, and respected to create better learning opportunities". Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

In a landmark (although not unexpected) decision that upends 50 years of constitutionally protected abortion rights, the US Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v Wade. The move is expected to lead to near-total prohibitions in around half the states.

This week EL PAÍS interviewed two leading economists, Paul Krugman and Jeffrey Sachs, to get their views on inflation, sustainable development and the impact of the Ukraine war on the global economy.

And in sports, the world was gripped by images of artistic swimmer Anita Alvarez sinking to the bottom of a pool after fainting at the world championships, and her dramatic rescue by US coach Andrea Fuentes.

Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

All eyes were on the Americas Summit this week following endless diplomatic bickering over the guest list. Many wonder whether the declarations on greater regional cooperation will lead to practical changes. Anticipation was also high for the first hearing of the House committee probing the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

EL PAÍS this week revealed additional information about a case involving WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange that could affect his extradition request by the US. A Spanish judge is trying to question lawyers who were spied on at the Ecuadorean embassy while Assange was there.

We also interviewed Rafa Nadal in the wake of his epic victory at the French Open, and immunotherapy specialist Robert Schreiber who explained why some cancers may soon be treated like a chronic disease. And a leading official at Madrid's Reina Sofía Museum provided a first-hand, emotional account of a recent visit by Mick Jagger.

Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

Colombia’s political landscape shifted this week after a populist businessman who’s being compared to Trump outperformed established contenders in the first round of the presidential election. Rodolfo Hernández, who once praised Hitler and sees women as housewives, has a good chance of defeating the left’s Gustavo Petro at the runoff.

In the US, yet another mass shooting made headlines, this time in Tulsa (Oklahoma). Figures show that there has been a daily average this year of 1.5 mass shootings, which could make 2022 a record year for gun violence. News were also dominated by the verdict in the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard case. We analyzed the decision and what it means for both parties.

This week we also feature an in-depth story about “the opium vampires,” people who travel from far and wide to remote areas of Spain in search of the white poppies that grow wild in abandoned fields.
