Spanish News in English

Dear readers,

The eruption on Sunday of a new volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma caught the world's attention this week. While there were no victims from the spectacular explosion and subsequent rivers of lava in the area, hundreds of people have been left homeless as the molten rock steamrolled its way over their houses. EL PAÍS was on the scene to speak to the residents, authorities and even tourists who were on the island this week.

Meanwhile, in Italy there was surprise news of the arrest of former Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont, who has been wanted by the Spanish justice system since he fled the country in 2017 in the wake of the unilateral secession attempt. His lawyer claimed on Friday that the European arrest warrant had been suspended.

And finally, there was more positive data from the coronavirus pandemic, with more than 76% of Spanish residents now fully vaccinated and the 14-day incidence of the virus steadily falling. Now the central government and the regions are grappling with the problem of an oversupply of vaccines, and are working carefully to avoid their expiration before use.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition.

Thanks for reading.
