Concern is growing over the rising number of coronavirus cases in Spain. According to the latest figures, the incidence rate over the last 14 days now stands at 305 per 100,000. With infections on the rise, health experts have called on the public to take care over the Christmas festive season, warning that social gatherings may turn into superspreader events.

This is what happened in Málaga, when a Christmas lunch for health workers at Regional University Hospital triggered an outbreak, with at least 80 coronavirus cases detected. Experts are also concerned about outbreaks in schools. In a bid to contain the spread, Spain will begin vaccinating children between the ages of five and 11 from December 15.

In other news, an English judge has called on Spain to clarify whether emeritus king Juan Carlos I is still a member of the royal family. The question has been raised due to a lawsuit that has been filed against the former monarch by his ex-lover Corinna Larsen. Whether or not it prospers will depend on if the court considers Juan Carlos to be protected by immunity as a sovereign.

And finally, we looked at the rare birds that have been sighted in Spain – including two North American snowy owls who landed in Asturias after being blown off course by a storm.

The headlines this week were dominated by news of the omicron variant of the coronavirus, which has more than 30 mutations and is believed to be more contagious than other strains.

In response to the concerns over the variant, Spain announced tighter restrictions on travel as well as quarantine measures for travelers from at-risk countries. Close contacts of omicron cases will also have to self-isolate for 10 days even if they are vaccinated.

By midday Friday, seven cases of the omicron variant had been detected in Spain: three in Madrid, two in Catalonia and two in the Balearic Islands. All of the cases, with the exception of one in the Madrid region, were among people who had recently arrived from South Africa. Meanwhile, coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country, with the 14-day incidence rate now standing at 234 cases per 100,000.

And finally, we looked at the leadership change at Spanish fashion giant Inditex, which has a market value of €87 billion. As of April, Marta Ortega – the daughter of the company's founder Amancio Ortega – will be chair, a move that has sparked many questions, in particular: why now?

Concerns are growing over the rising number of coronavirus cases in Spain. On Thursday, the 14-day incidence rate rose to 160 per 100,000, up 11 points since Wednesday. As contagions spike, a growing number of regions are turning to Covid passports to curb the spread. This in turn has prompted more people to get vaccinated: last week Spain saw a 25% rise in the number of first vaccine doses administered.

On Thursday, women's groups took to the street of several Spanish cities to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In Spain, more than 53,000 women are under police protection due to gender violence.

In other news, the volcanic eruption on La Palma is now the longest seen on the island in 377 years. So far, the lava has covered more than 1,000 hectares of land and destroyed nearly 1,500 buildings. Around 7,500 people are also still unable to return home.

And finally, we looked at the new platform España Vaciada that is hoping to bring the needs of Spain‘s rural, depopulated areas to the forefront of the political agenda.

Coronavirus infections in Spain continue to rise, with the incidence rate above 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over 14 days for the first time in two months.

The upward trend has prompted several regions to consider introducing or widening the use of the so-called "Covid passport" in spaces such as bars and restaurants. But while contagions are rising, Covid-19 vaccines remain very effective against preventing serious illness and death, according to studies analyzed by EL PAÍS.

In other news, the new volcano on La Palma claimed its first victim last weekend, when a man died while clearing away ash from his home. Although experts say the volcano has "lost energy," the lava flows continue to wreak havoc: more than 1,000 hectares have been covered with molten rock since the eruption began two months ago.

Spain's coronavirus incidence rate is once again on the rise. The country has now entered a medium-risk situation as Europe sees a surge in new cases. Experts, however, say it is unlikely that Spain will experience a sixth wave.

In other news, police have arrested 12 passengers who fled a plane after it made an emergency landing in Mallorca on October 5. The aircraft, which was flying from Morocco to Turkey, was forced to land after a man reportedly began suffering from a "diabetic crisis." He was later discharged after no medical issues were detected and arrested. Another 12 passengers remain at large. Police are investigating whether the crisis was deliberately triggered.

Meanwhile in Spain, truck drivers have called a three-day strike for December 20 to 22 to protest what they claim is the government's failure to help the sector, which is facing new pressure from the sudden spike in diesel prices. If the stoppage goes ahead, it could cause supply chain problems during one of the busiest periods of the year.

The situation on La Palma, in Spain's Canary Islands, remains tense with the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano showing no signs of easing. This week, residents in three towns were told to remain indoors and wear face masks due to the heavy ash falls, while earthquakes continued to be felt at all hours of the day.

Meanwhile, more information was revealed about the man arrested for the murder of a nine-year-old boy named Álex. According to the suspect's prison file, he was interviewed 16 times while on parole from prison, where he was serving a 30-year sentence for another killing.

In other news, the founder of social network Tuenti, Zaryn Dentzel, was attacked by a gang of hooded assailants in an apparent bid to steal his bitcoin fortune.

And finally, we looked at how a network of octogenarians wound up helping a Spanish drug trafficker to launder money.

The coronavirus pandemic dominated the headlines once again this week as more news emerged on vaccines, variants and case numbers.

On Wednesday, Spanish authorities announced that recipients of the Janssen vaccine would be offered a booster shot of Pfizer or Moderna after a study found the former to be less effective against Covid-19 than the other two.

Meanwhile, in Valencia the regional government expressed concern this week about the rise in coronavirus infections among tourists in Benidorm. Of the latest cases detected in the Spanish city, 53% were among the foreign population.

Health experts in Spain are also keeping a close eye on the delta plus variant of the coronavirus, which has now been found in seven regions. Only around 30 cases, however have been identified, and epidemiologists say there is currently no cause for alarm.

And finally, EL PAÍS rode with a Spanish truck driver for four days, all the way to the UK and back, to find out why younger generations are no longer interested in the job.
