This celebration has been held in our country since 2016 in order to provide women writers' work with more visibility and to compensate for the discrimination they have suffered throughout history.
There was a time when they had to conceal their gender under pseudonyms if they didn´t want their work to be considered inferior. Despite being regarded unsuitable for writing, female authors like Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Virginia Woolf… made a lasting mark on literature, creating strong independent female characters sometimes. They struggled for recognition and respect and they succeeded. But it is noteworthy to mention that even a 21st century author like J.K. Rowling had to use her initials to disguise her identity when she first published Harry Potter.
