Tips to Tackle Mediation

From Lorena Alonsoguez's Linguistic Mediation in EOI Information

REMEMBER AS WELL:
  • You know the person you are talking to. Treat them accordingly: say you will assist them at the beginning and at the end of your talk.
  • Always paraphrase if you do not know one of the words in English! Or give an equivalent in meaning.
  • Even though you may pretend the examiner is the person you are mediating with, do not ask questions, never expect answers; the examiner is not the person you are mediating with --you are doing a monologue.

EL PAÍS in English

Dear readers,

On the first anniversary of the massacre at an elementary school in Uvalde, we traveled to this Texas town where, on the surface, everything is different, but found that very little has in fact changed.

This week we also analyzed how a tiny piece of high tech is driving global geopolitics, explored the causes of the fentanyl crisis in the U.S., interviewed Natalie Portman and spoke to plant experts about the best way to care for orchids.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from EL PAÍS USA Edition. Thanks for reading.

C2 Cleft Sentences

We use cleft sentences, especially in speaking, to connect what is already understood to what is new to the listener.
In a cleft sentence, a single message is divided (cleft) into two clauses. This allows us to focus on the new information.

EL PAÍS in English

Dear readers,

Ukraine is aiming to mark a turning point in the course of the war with its anticipated counteroffensive to retake territory occupied by Russia. As expectation builds, EL PAÍS examined the five main points on the front where Kyiv could launch its attack.

In other news, we spoke to Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso about his decision to dissolve the National Assembly, discussed current economic events with Nobel laureate Robert F. Engle, and talked to esteemed thinker Michael J. Sandel about why the left needs to offer a positive take on patriotism.

Get the Most out of your Study Habits with these Tips

Few things are more stressful than studying for a big, important test. There is so much information to review for an exam, and unfortunately, study skills aren’t something they actually teach in many schools. For a lot of us, studying is an exhausting process of trial and error, and it can be all too tempting to just skip it entirely and try to cram the night before a big exam. (from Dictionary.com).

The Climate Connection

The Climate Connection is a ten-part podcast series from the British Council which explores the relationship between the climate crisis and language education.

Across the ten episodes, you'll hear from a wide range of leading practitioners working in the sector – teachers, trainers, researchers, publishers and authors. We’ll travel from Colombia to China, Moldova to Mali, and Palestine to Poland in our quest to share what’s happening at the cutting edge of climate action in language education.

In partnership with the Oxford English Dictionary, we’ll also learn more about the origins of climate-related language, in both English and other languages.

EL PAÍS in English

Dear readers,

EL PAÍS has published an investigation into child abuse in the Catholic Church. The story of the Jesuit priest Alfonso Pedrajas, who preyed on schoolchidren for decades while Church officials looked the other way, came to light after a nephew stepped forward with Pedrajas' diary, which the latter left in a computer file before passing away.

This week we also reviewed the most relevant aspects of the coronation ceremony for Charles III and Camilla, went over facts and figures ahead of the Kentucky Derby, and spoke with a Saudi scientist who has confirmed the fraud behind the world's top university rankings.
