All the president’s businesses

Dear readers,

Donald Trump isn’t the first U.S. president to come from the business world, but there’s no precedent for one whose fortune has grown so much during his presidency, largely thanks to — as his critics argue — the power and visibility of the presidential brand itself.

The name Larry Amaury Álvarez Núñez, better known as “Larry Changa,” is becoming increasingly prominent in Colombia. The 47-year-old Venezuelan is one of the founders of the Tren de Aragua criminal gang. Changa has made an unusual proposal to the Gustavo Petro government to enter the latter’s “total peace” process and avoid extradition to Chile.

This week's interviewees include the president-elect of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz, who says he wants "capitalism for everyone;" Lux Pascal, sister to the popular actor Pedro Pascal and an actress in her own right; and a marine biologist who was bitten in the head by a shark, and is now on a mission to prove that the animals are not the killers they're made out to be.

Chicago, the heart of the rebellion

Dear readers,

‌Time and again, Donald Trump has lashed out against Chicago, claiming against all available evidence that it has more crime that anywhere else in the world. After threatening to do so since August, he finally ordered the deployment of the National Guard. But Chicago, and Illinois, have responded strongly.

‌Meanwhile, Gazans are pessimistic about the future despite the ceasefire deal signed to great fanfare in Egypt on Monday. Our guest columnist, former Israeli foreign minister Shlomo Ben Ami, explains why "total victory in Gaza is a delusion."

‌This week we also talked with Julia Roberts about her new movie After the Hunt, explored social media's shift to the right, and put together a selection of Diane Keaton's most iconic outfits of the last 50 years.

C2 Language Teaching in the Age of AI

Artificial Intelligence has recently taken on the role of an over-eager teaching assistant. You know the type: they appear at your elbow with astonishing speed, sometimes handing you exactly the materials you need, sometimes presenting an essay so suspiciously polished you wonder whose work it really is. At their best, they can make your life easier; at their worst, they generate three pages of nonsense and then ask if you’d like them to staple it. (Nicky De Proost)

Women Writers' Day (TODAY)

Read this Prezzi Presentation on this blog entry from WE READ, WE LEARN A literary approach in the English class at IES Doctor Fleming to learn about famous Women Writers in English Literature.
This celebration has been held in our country since 2016 in order to provide women writers' work with more visibility and to compensate for the discrimination they have suffered throughout history.

There was a time when they had to conceal their gender under pseudonyms if they didn´t want their work to be considered inferior. Despite being regarded unsuitable for writing, female authors like Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Virginia Woolf… made a lasting mark on literature, creating strong independent female characters sometimes. They struggled for recognition and respect and they succeeded. But it is noteworthy to mention that even a 21st century author like J.K. Rowling had to use her initials to disguise her identity when she first published Harry Potter.

Israel and Hamas sign Trump’s Gaza peace plan

Dear readers,

On Thursday, two days after the second anniversary of the outbreak of the Gaza war, Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to implement the preliminary phase of a peace plan to bring an end to the conflict, which includes the return of all remaining hostages in the Strip.

‌Meanwhile, we reported on the ongoing human suffering in Gaza, where many children have lost access to schooling and survivors continue to live amid the devastation wrought by Israeli attacks.

‌We also looked at the case of several Salvadorans deported under the Trump administration who vanished into El Salvador’s jails, with little to no information provided by U.S. or Salvadoran authorities. The case resembles one of “enforced disappearances,” and has been brought before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

‌And in other news, we caught up with Maye Musk, who shared what it’s like to raise the world’s richest man; spoke with the father of paleogenetics about how Neanderthals help explain who we are; and sat down with Ron Perlman to review his storied career.
