Article Writing

This is the presentation seen in class about article writing.

Have a look at the two samples of article writing here. Notice:
· title,
· type of vocabulary,
· tone of the writing,
· topic sentence in paragraphs,
· first and last paragraphs,
· use of punctuation
· clear structure of the writing
· coherence and cohesion (in paragraphs and in the whole text).

Write a 350-word article about one of the following topics: 

1) A local councillor has made a terrible mistake that has caused the loss of 700 million euros of public money. However, no one thinks he should resign. You have decided to write an article for your local magazine stating your opinion. Include the following points:
· Current state of affairs.
· Liability.
· Accountability.
· Consequences.

2) The government wants to keep primary schools open all year round so working parents can combine childcare and work. You have decided to write an article for the parents’ association magazine stating your opinion. Include the following points:
· Cost.
· Effectiveness.
· Impact on adults.
· Impact on children.

3) You have been asked to write an article for Job Prospects magazine, a publication for 18-30 year olds, on the following topic:
How taking a gap year*can enhance your career prospects.
*A gap year is a break usually taken between leaving school/college and starting university, and is seen as a valuable way to gain work experience and life skills.

You should focus on the types of job and leisure opportunities for young people taking a gap year in your country (or a country that you know well), the types of skills that can be gained and the likely value of these to potential employers.

4) You have seen the following announcement in an international magazine:
READERS - YOUR VIEWS WANTED!
Changing World magazine invites its readers to contribute to our debate on whether family life has changed for the better or worse in their country over the past 50 years.

We are looking for contributions in the form of a short article which discusses this topic. The three best articles will be printed in the next issue of our magazine.

Write the article for the readers of the magazine.
