Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

Nine Catalan separatists jailed for their involvement in the failed 2017 secession attempt in Catalonia were released from prison on Wednesday after receiving government pardons. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the move as a bid to restore "social harmony" in the region, but the opposition argue it was politically motivated.

In other news, antivirus software entrepreneur John McAfee was found dead in his cell in a penitentiary in Barcelona. Prison workers found the 75-year-old hanging and authorities are treating the case as a suicide.

Meanwhile in Spain, a coronavirus outbreak linked to student vacations in Mallorca has led to hundreds of positive cases, with 320 contagions recorded just in Madrid. The news comes as expert warn that the delta strain of the virus will become predominant in a matter of weeks.

And finally, as of Saturday, face masks in Spain will no longer need to be worn outside if social distancing can be respected. To help clarify the changes, EL PAÍS published an infographic special on what rules apply to the beach, public transportation and open-air events.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition.

Thanks for reading.

A century ago Ludwig Wittgenstein changed philosophy for ever

Written in the trenches, his “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus” (526 numbered statements) baffles and inspires
Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889 - 1951) is regarded by many as the most outstanding philosopher of the twentieth century.

Yes, I know this is so little ... but it might arouse your curiosity.

The book is 75 pages long – "As to the shortness of the book, I am awfully sorry for it ... If you were to squeeze me like a lemon you would get nothing more out of me," he told Ogden – and presents seven numbered propositions (1–7), with various sub-levels
  1. The world is everything that is the case.
  2. What is the case, the fact, is the existence of atomic facts.
  3. The logical picture of the facts is the thought.
  4. The thought is the significant proposition.
  5. Propositions are truth-functions of elementary propositions.
  6. The general form of a truth-function is:This is the general form of proposition.
  7. Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.

Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

The big news this week was the announcement from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez that face masks will no longer need to be worn outdoors from Saturday, June 26.

The much-awaited statement came at a time when the vaccination campaign has moved on to the over-40 age group in much of the country, and with the incidence of the virus at its lowest level since last August.

Meanwhile in Spain, violence against women has surged in the space of a month, with 12 women killed by their current or former partners since May 17. The latest victim was Consuelo, 81, who was attacked and killed with a hammer by her husband this week.

And finally, we are back with another episode of our ¿Qué? Spanish News Podcast, in which we look at the tragic disappearance of Olivia and Anna in Tenerife, and discuss how Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez‘s expected "bilateral meeting” with US President Joe Biden turned into a brief, hallway chat.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition.

Thanks for reading.

Spanish News in English EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

Our headlines were dominated this week by developments in the world of travel, as Spain slowly starts to reopen to foreign visitors ahead of the key summer tourism season.

Meanwhile, in Tenerife there was a tragic discovery, as the body of one of the missing girls kidnapped by their father in April was found in a bag weighed down at the bottom of the sea. On Friday the search continued for the youngster's missing sister.

On the international stage, there was good news for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who is due to meet US President Joe Biden for the first time next week, at a bilateral meeting on the fringes of a NATO summit.

And finally, we are back with another episode of our ¿Qué? Spanish News Podcast, in which we consider the role of the Spanish regional governments during the coronavirus crisis.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition.

Thanks for reading.

Connotative Words

When you look up a word in the dictionary, you will find its literal, or denotative, meaning. This is the basic definition of the word. However, many words — especially nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs — also have connotative meanings. Discover the emotional side of words by reviewing some connotation examples. Spanish News in English

Dear readers,

There was good news on the coronavirus front in Spain this week, as the number of Covid-19 deaths fell to their lowest in May since the month of August.

Meanwhile, the country's health authorities have opted to vaccinate the 40-49 age group with the Janssen vaccine, which will speed the campaign up given that it only requires one shot to offer its full protection.

From Monday, global travelers will be able to return to Spanish borders, but only if they have been vaccinated more than 14 days previously. The full details of these restrictions are due to be released today, Saturday.

And finally, there are new coronavirus restrictions in force across Spain. Check out our interactive map to see what you can and can't do, depending on your location.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition, and that you are staying safe.

Thanks for reading.
